At midday: TSX rises on oil boost, hopes of lockdown easing Canada’s main stock index rose on Thursday as oil prices recovered on hopes of production cuts, while some provinces prepared to ease shutdowns imposed to fight the coronavirus outbreak. At 11:36 a.m. ET, the Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX composite index was up 26.98 points, or 0.19%, at 14,315.14. It increased as high as 14,422.42 in morning trading. The energy sector climbed 4.9% as crude prices jumped. The materials sector, which includes precious and base metals miners and fertilizer companies, added 2.3% as gold futures rose The financials sector sat lower by 0.3%, while the industrials sector dipped 0.2%. Some Canadian provinces, such as Quebec and Saskatchewan, prepared to start lifting shutdowns in the coming weeks as data showed Canada’s death toll from the coronavirus rose by less than 10% for the third day in a row on Wednesday.
