Since the metal, which is mainly used in stainless steel and batteries, suffered a 45% price fall last year, established miners in the western world have been struggling to survive whereas new producers in Indonesia have been profiting handsomely. Nickel ore being mined on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi If nickel was just another metal going through the transition which always comes when technical innovation delivers a cheaper means of production, there would not be a political and diplomatic element to the issue. Nickel, however, is different because it is an important metal in rechargeable, long-life, batteries of the sort used in electric vehicles (EVs) and therefore a key to reducing the use of the fossil fuels blamed for climate change.
