BYD, US at odds over tariffs as Chinese EV maker eyes Canada [USA TODAY]

The world's now-number-one electric vehicle maker said in a lawsuit filed on Jan. 26 in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York that Trump exceeded his legal authority when he enacted "substantial tariffs" that "have been imposed on goods imported into the United States from nearly every foreign country, including multiple countries from which plaintiffs source their imports." The lawsuit asks the court to declare Trump's tariffs unlawful because the law cited by the administration at the time the levies were imposed "does not authorize the president" to set them. The suit was filed even as a U.S. Supreme Court case that is still pending considers the same question.The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The lawsuit comes after BYD set a goal to sell 1.3 million EVs outside of China in 2026.
