At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, there were more than 1 million restaurants in the U.S. employing nearly 16 million people. Now 7 million are predicted to lose their jobs, as more than 100,000 restaurants shut down. In New York City, where roughly 10,000 people have already died, accounting for roughly 40% of all COVID-19 deaths in the U.S., the industry has been hit especially hard. Restaurants and bars in the Big Apple recently generated roughly $50 billion in annual revenue.
