Avian flu outbreaks have now been reported in cows and chickens in several states. One person is also known to have been infected in Texas, as well as at least three cats. It is unusual, although not unheard of, for people to get infected with avian flu and in this case, the person and cats had close contact with infected dairy cows. Several dairy cattle herds have been infected including in Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Ohio and Michigan, with analyses suggesting that the infections likely came from wild birds. It is not yet confirmed whether the cows in each herd are infecting each other directly or not, or whether the infections came from contact with wild birds.
