It would seem to be a natural partnership — a nuclear fuels company and a small nuclear reactor operation, each separately announcing their plans last year to expand operations in Pike County. But it hasn't been until now that California-based Oklo and Maryland-based Centrus announced that they've begun discussions on forming a joint venture. The connection involves a precursor to fuel-grade uranium called deconversion, the chemical process of converting enriched uranium into a usable fuel, typically uranium oxide or uranium metal. Oklo would use the so-called high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel in its proposed small reactors that are still in the developmental stage. Centrus already is enriching uranium using centrifuges at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant near Piketon.
