Trump’s Economy Is Coming Off The Rails And Highways Following the transportation industry is one way to judge how the economy is doing. Truck and railroads carry pretty much move all the goods and raw materials that are sold or used in the United States. That is one reason investors keep an eye on the Dow Jones Index to get a feeling for how the economy is performing. Neither railroad, highway traffic nor the Index are doing well recently. The underlying economy is weaker than perceived when you look at March quarter’s GDP numbers recent employment report it could enter a recession when few are forecasting one one reliable indicator foreshadowing a downturn in the next 6 to 18 months almost 70% of CFO’s are predicting a recession by the end of 2020 Railroad traffic is lower than last year and getting worse Association of American Railroads In its release ending on June 1 for the month of May May by itself saw a 4.1% decline in total traffic and 5.9% drop in Intermodal traffic.
