to be the largest single investment in the region's history, and to create 1,000 permanent jobs. Instead, that investment is heading to Oklahoma. Century Aluminum, the company that was previously eyeing Kentucky for its newest smelter, that it is embarking on a joint development with Emirates Global Aluminum to construct the project at a site in Inola, just east of Tulsa. "Both parties will now solely focus their greenfield development efforts" on the Oklahoma site, according to Century Aluminum, indicating the company is no longer considering construction of a new Kentucky-based smelter in the near future. Construction on the project will begin later this year. It will be the first primary aluminum smelter built in the U.S. in more than 45 years, and will more than double domestic aluminum production, the companies said — a significant leap for an industry that has languished in capacity behind overseas competitors.
