Complacency is causing investors to downplay the gravity of geopolitical risk in the global economy, according to the chief executive officer of alternative investment firm The Carlyle Group. Speaking on stage at Semafor's World Economy Summit in Washington, DC, on Tuesday, Harvey Schwartz said that investors have “gotten accustomed to very unsettling geopolitical events sorting themselves out,” leading many to misprice such risks. The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank triggered a market reaction seven times as severe as when Russia invaded Ukraine, added Schwartz, who took the helm at the $477 billion investment firm in February 2023, shortly before the demise of the Santa Clara, CA-headquartered bank. “[Geopolitical risks] are hard to price and they're hard to hedge, and so it's very difficult to assess,” he said.
