According to a recent Morningstar Canada survey , about half of all financial advisors in Canada are offering alternatives actively to clients as a means of reducing overall risk and generating uncorrelated returns. Amid the growing breadth of alternative strategies, there are many instances in which money managers invest in a single asset class or geography with opaque risk criteria, says Alex Singh, managing director and head of alternatives partnerships at BMO Global Asset Management (BMO GAM). “Not all alternatives are created equal. There's a need not only to be diversified within alternatives and private markets' exposure, and a very key element is reducing the risks associated with manager and vintage selection.” Getting access to alternatives is only the starting point.
