Nikkei tumbles while markets in China, Hong Kong rebound Japanese markets tumbled Friday as they reopened after the New Year holidays, while other Asian indexes were mixed after a technology-led sell-off on Wall Street. The Nikkei 225 index NIK, -2.67% was last down 2.8%, as technology and electronics makers slumped in the first trading day of 2019 for Tokyo. SoftBank 9984, -3.50% and Sony 6758, -3.81% fell around 4%, and Fast Retailing 9983, -5.91% dropped 6%. The yen stabilized against the dollar USDJPY, +0.65% following Thursday’s spike. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng HSI, +1.30% rallied 1.2%, as oil producer CNOOC 0883, +4.70% rose 4% and telecom China Mobile 0941, +2.43% gained 2.5%. Apple suppliers continued to sink, with AAC 2018, -2.44% and Sunny Optical 2382, -1.87% down more than 2% each.
