OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and other generative AI products, announced a stunning deal last week in which Disney is investing $1 billion in it as part of an agreement to become a content licensing partner for OpenAI's short-form video platform Sora. This means that for three years OpenAI users will have access to Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse and Cinderella as well as ones from Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars. “Really happy to be working with Disney to bring some magic to Sora and image gen!,” tweeted its CEO Sam Altman, “Disney is the best storytelling company in the world, and our users really, really want to generate content with their characters.” Even before the Disney deal, OpenAI had sprinkled plenty of fairy dust to attract hundreds of millions of users.
