The $12.3 billion all-stock deal , which was first announced in October and was approved last month by the banks' shareholders and the Federal Reserve, officially closed on Monday, Feb. 2. Fifth Third is now of the the largest banks in Michigan and the ninth-largest U.S. bank, with approximately $294 billion in assets. In a phone interview Monday, Fifth Third CEO Tim Spence said they plan to do the official conversion of Comerica Bank's customer systems to Fifth Third's on Sept. 8 — the day after Labor Day. He said the account numbers for all or nearly all Comerica customers will stay the same after the conversion to Fifth Third's systems. "In the vast majority of cases, your account number will stay the same," Spence said. "Occasionally there will be some overlap in the numbering, but in general we've been very successful, like 99.9% of the time in the past.” There also will be a new name for Comerica Park, where the Detroit Tigers play.
