In separate shareholder meetings, Fifth Third and Comerica investors approved the merger with 99.7% and 97% of votes, respectively. The acquisition, first announced in October, is still subject to regulatory approval, but is expected to be completed by the end of March, the companies said in a statement "We'll create a more dynamic, resilient institution with the scale and capabilities to deliver exceptional value for our customers, communities, and shareholders," Fifth Third CEO Tim Spence , said in a statement announcing shareholder approval. While the deal is not expected to change Fifth Third's hometown banking landscape, it will expand the lender's reach into the Southwest: Texas, Arizona and California. Fifth Third said the merger would give it operations in 17 of the 20 fastest-growing markets in the country. The deal adds more than 350 bank branches to Fifth Third's almost 1,100 locations. Fifth Third said it expects to make about $850 million in cuts or "cost synergies
