In his State of the Union speech, President Trump asked everyone to stand up who agreed that the first “duty of government was to protect Americans.” When Democrats remained seated Trump tried to use it as a “gotcha” moment. But everyone standing was wrong, including President Trump. While protecting Americans is one of the highest duties, it is not the first. President Trump, the vice president, all Cabinet members, all Supreme Court justices, all legislators, and all persons in the military services take an oath to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” It is from the Constitution that all rights and duties evolve. This is the first duty. Unfortunately, Trump and his administration violate the Constitution on a daily basis.
