Futures for the Nikkei 225 Stock Average were at 38,315.00 as of 7:24 a.m. in Tokyo on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, compared with the closing level of 37,934.76 for the underlying gauge on Friday. The yen was at 156.25 per dollar, after rebounding Monday from a slump past 160 against the dollar. Yen Traders See Uphill Battle for Japan to Halt Currency's Slide The Nikkei 225 earlier this year rose above its historic peak marked in 1989, driven by factors including a weaker yen, hopes of improving corporate governance and signs inflation is taking hold. The gauge has risen about 30% over the past year, but just 13% in dollar terms. While a weaker yen supports the value of overseas revenue, business leaders are concerned that depreciation will raise costs of imported materials.
