Oil futures end lower as Trump demands that OPEC ‘get prices down’ Oil futures ended with a loss on Thursday after President Donald Trump in a tweet called for the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries to maintain lower crude-oil prices. “We protect the countries of the Middle East, they would not be safe for very long without us, and yet they continue to push for higher and higher oil prices! We will remember. The OPEC monopoly must get prices down now!” Trump tweeted on Thursday. October West Texas Intermediate crude CLV8, -0.49% lost 32 cents, or nearly 0.5%, to settle at $70.80 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The U.S. benchmark contract on Wednesday closed at the highest for a front-month contract since July 10, according to FactSet data. The October contract expired at the end of session.
