Oil posts hefty loss for the week as OPEC, Russia talk output increase Oil prices plunged on Friday to finish at their lowest levels in weeks, as reports said OPEC and Russia are considering lifting production by as much as 1 million barrels a day to meet the shortfall in supply from Iran and Venezuela. Data Friday showing the biggest weekly rise in the number of active U.S. oil rigs, which suggests a possible uptick in production, also contributed in the decline in prices. July West Texas Intermediate crude oil CLN8, -4.30% slumped $2.83, or 4%, to settle at $67.88 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That was the lowest finish for a most-active contract since May 1, according to FactSet data. Prices marked a weekly loss of roughly 4.9%, which was the first weekly slide in about a month.
