U.S. benchmark oil futures settled unchanged on Thursday, holding ground at their lowest since early 2002. Prices had spent part of the session attempting to rebound from Wednesday's settlement at the lowest in almost 18 years. Forecasts for a significant drop in oil demand this year from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries on Thursday and the International Energy Agency on Wednesday fed concerns over a glut in global supplies. May West Texas Intermediate oil settled at $19.87 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, unchanged from Wednesday.
