Past acquisitions were about taking out rivals in basins – mostly the oil-rich Permian – where companies were already operating to increase their scale and cut operating and capital costs. Combining two entities with overlapping assets creates savings on operating expenses and a lower CAPEX program. The result is a more resilient operator with lower breakeven costs.The Cabot-Cimarex merger is a different animal.
