There is "little room to cut interest rates in 2026." That's the IMF Executive Board, on the record, April 2, 2026. On the surface, things look... fine. U.S. GDP growth hit 2.0% in 2025 despite a government shutdown in Q4 and major policy shifts. The IMF projects a modest pickup to 2.4% in 2026. Inflation is supposedly on track to hit the 2% target by early 2027. And Fed Chair Jerome Powell even gave it a name during a recent visit to Harvard: "I would call that a soft landing,” as quoted by Harvard Gazette journalist Christina Pazzanese. Cool. So why isn't everyone celebrating? Because "fine" is doing a LOT of heavy lifting right now The IMF's full report reads like a warning label. Rate cuts are basically on ice. Inflation isn't cooperating. Core PCE inflation sat at 2.9% in 2025, barely budging. The IMF projects it'll still be at 2.6% by the end of 2026.
