Kyrsten Sinema , the former U.S. senator who left the Democratic Party to become an Independent in 2022 , has been sued by the ex-wife of a member of her security detail , alleging Sinema broke up their marriage. Sinema, 49, who was elected to the Senate in 2018 as a Democrat from Arizona, did not seek reelection in 2024, and she left office in January 2025. In a lawsuit filed Jan. 14 in a federal court in North Carolina, Heather Ammel alleges Sinema initiated an affair with her then-husband Matthew Ammel, a U.S. Army veteran, and that Sinema's "intentional and malicious interference" broke up the Ammels' "good and loving marriage." The case in North Carolina , filed under that state's “homewrecker law," paints Sinema as a woman who broke up the marriage of a troubled Army veteran and alludes to some of the exotic travel, including trips to France, Japan and the U.K. , that led to ethics complaints against Sinema before leaving office.
