the start of construction on the state's first installation for capturing and permanently storing carbon dioxide. Carbon TerraVault I will be able to inject almost 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 per year into a pair of depleted oil and gas reservoirs more than a mile deep. Scheduled to become operational early next year, CTV I could eventually store up to 38 million metric tons of the greenhouse gas. “We're putting carbon back to where it came from,” CTV Managing Director Chris Gould told Thursday's audience of more than 100 people gathered outdoors on a mildly chilly, breezy morning in western Kern. The project is the first of half a dozen such facilities proposed as far north as the Sacramento area by Long Beach-based California Resources Corp. and its Canadian-based financial partner Brookfield Asset Management Inc.
