Contura Energy: The Company To Buy If Coal Prices Have Bottomed Summary Contura Energy is a small ambitious coal mining company operating in the West Virginia Appalachians. Coal has been in an economic depression since 2010 that began with the energy price collapse in 2008 and was prolonged by huge increases in U.S. shale oil production. Now that growth in the U.S. shale patch is slowing and energy demand is rising, the bottom may finally be in for coal prices. Contura currently trades at less than a quarter of its tangible book value and is cheaper than its peers on an EV/EBITDA basis. While the company has had an awful year, 2020 is likely to be much better as its new mines become operational and coal prices continue to improve.
