CoreCivic, which operates Dilley under a federal contract, has said detainees’ health and safety are its top priorities.Under a decades-old federal court settlement governing the detention of immigrant children, minors generally are not supposed to be held in custody for longer than 20 days. But lawyers representing families say many have remained detained for weeks or months beyond that limit.
