U.S. stocks fell sharply at the start of trading Wednesday as investors digested economic and earnings data that demonstrated the impact of the COVID-19 lockdowns. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened about 537 points, 2.2%, lower, while the S&P 500 was off by about 65 points, 2.3%. The Nasdaq Composite lost about 160 points or 1.9% at the open. Retail sales fell at the sharpest rate on record in March, while a factory reading from the New York area also hit a record low. Shares of Delta Airlines, Inc. and United Airlines Holdings, Inc. rose after reaching an agreement with the U.S. government that could allow them to avert bankruptcy.
