However, an upcoming change to its pricing model has sparked outrage. According to a report from the Financial Times, Walmart has obtained patents that will allow machine learning and other automated processes to have more impact on the retail giant's pricing, leading to concerns from experts and customers. Walmart Receives New Patents According to the Financial Times , Walmart obtained U.S. patents for two systems that would use machine learning to assist in pricing. One patent is for a “system and method for dynamically and automatically updating item prices” for markdowns in its eCommerce unit. The other is for using machine learning to predict demand and recommend prices.
