North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is joining other Democrats in challenging the Trump administration's proposal to ease regulations on how businesses report their use of toxic chemical compounds that can cause long-lasting water and soil contamination. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced in November a proposal to implement more exceptions for businesses to report the levels of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, also known as forever chemicals. “This data is necessary for EPA to evaluate and manage the risks associated with PFAS exposure and to prevent harm to human health and the environment,” the attorneys general representing 15 states wrote in a Dec. 22 comment letter. “EPA fails to provide a reasoned explanation for its sudden reversal and ignores the substantial body of reliable scientific research showing the importance of collecting this data.” PFAS have been used in consumer products since the 1940s — including clothing, non-stick
