Year-round greenhouse farming keeps fruits and vegetables in season, but it comes with a cost: increased water usage. Smarter recycling starts with smarter systems, and artificial intelligence (AI) is leading the charge. Unused water from the plants is recycled, explains Keith Bradley, vice-president of information and technology at Nature Fresh Farms in Leamington, Ont. “We prepare it – clean up the nutrients that we don't want in there, any dirt, things like that – and make sure it's ready to be recycled,” Bradley says. A growing operation without seasons Founded in 1999, the family-owned business operates 2,500 acres of greenhouses across Canada, the United States and Mexico. It delivers fresh, local produce – including tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and strawberries – to customers year-round.
