by being named one of the best metro areas for science, technology , engineering and math (STEM) professionals. WalletHub was recently ranked Austin the No. 5 best city in America for STEM jobs in 2026. Austin was the only Texas city to make the personal finance website's top 10 list for STEM careers. To determine the most STEM-friendly environments, WalletHub compared the 100 biggest metro areas across 21 key metrics. This year's data set ranges from per-capita job openings for STEM graduates to median wage growth for STEM workers. "Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) jobs tend to have high salaries, and job opportunities grow at three times the rate of non-STEM jobs," WalletHub Analyst Chip Lugo said in a release. "We can only expect this to accelerate in the future as new technologies continue to change the employment landscape."
