In fact, Natterjack remains an unusually bright spot in a challenging category. Irish Whiskey is facing some of the hardest times the spirit ever has. According to The Irish Times , since “May (2025) as many as 90 per cent of whiskey distilleries had paused or reduced production. Since then, several companies have resumed production, but many more stills may have stayed cold.” Waterford Distillery and Killarney Brewing & Distilling Company have shuttered their doors while Diageo-owned Roe & Coe Distillery has paused production. “There's definitely at least four distilleries that have closed their doors for good,” Mehigan says. “There also are some quiet closings, where people have stopped making whiskey, but they haven't advertised it because if you are closing and people find out, they can never sell another bottle.” With the shutterings and pausing of production of many Irish whiskey brands, Mehigan says “I take no joy in that.
