In a March 12 earnings call, Dollar General's Chief Operating Officer Emily Taylor confirmed the chain has cut 1,500 SKUs – short for Stock Keeping Unit that differentiate items – from its inventory, RetailDive reported. As a result, merchandise levels dropped 5.7% year over year in the fourth quarter, down $379 million. Stores averaged a 7% decline in inventory levels, store officials said. “The team has done just a fabulous job over the last two years, quite frankly, in reducing inventory, ” CEO Todd Vasos said during the call. “And there's more to come.” Dollar General hasn't confirmed which items it has eliminated from inventory. It has removed some of its on-floor displays, however. “The team has also reduced floor stands pretty significantly in stores, which has helped reduce the overall clutter inside our stores, and that continues to be executed as done,” Taylor said. 2,000 items for $1 or less Price continues to be a key factor in Dollar General's growth strategy.
