Shares of Quest Diagnostics Inc. were indicated up about 4% in premarket trading Wednesday after the health care diagnostics company reported first-quarter earnings that beat expectations, despite a "material decline" in testing volumes in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Net income fell to $99 million, or 73 cents a share, from $164 million, or $1.20 a share, in the year ago period. Excluding non-recurring items, adjusted earnings per share declined to 94 cents from $1.40, but was above the FactSet consensus of 88 cents. Revenue fell 3.7% to $1.82 billion, but beat the FactSet consensus of $1.75 billion. Among actions the company has taken to protect financial flexibility amid the COVID-19 pandemic include pay cuts, suspension of some benefits, reduced hours for employees and the suspension of share buybacks. The company said it remains committed to its quarterly dividend at this time. The stock has lost 11.6% year to date through Tuesday, while the S&P 500 has declined 15.3%.
