The upward trend has most local employers and business leaders optimistic about the coming year and beyond. "Hiring is an indicator of where employers think the economy is going. Hiring is the kind of investment that's relatively sticky," said Professor Alan Benson at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. The rosy jobs outlook at one point appeared blindingly bright, as the state Department of Employment and Economic Development, using federal Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates, said the Rochester area added nearly 7,000 net jobs last year. The resulting 5.4% growth rate would have led the nation. Questions about those figures brought a closer look, then a downward revision to 919 new jobs. The 0.7% growth rate, though smaller than before, still led the state. Without question, job growth here is strong.
