There’s plenty to pick at, from his thoughts on James Gunn’s firing (“I haven’t second-guessed their decision”), the notion of the X-Men joining the MCU (“There shouldn't be two Marvels.”) and the new streaming wars. The whole thing is worth a read, but part of what stood out is a frank acknowledgment that a Star Wars movie every year is too many Star Wars movies. As hoped four months ago when Solo: A Star Wars Story underwhelmed, the relative failure of the unrequested Star Wars story would be the thing that shook up Disney enough to stop this “once a year, come hell or high water” madness. As such, yes, Solo may have “saved” Star Wars by dying a grim box office death ($214 million domestic and $393m worldwide on a $275m budget).
