Just four months into the year and California has surpassed the number of measles cases it had in all of 2025. As of April 13, there were 39 confirmed measles cases reported by the California Department of Public Health. Two days later, San Francisco health officials announced that an infant under 12 months was confirmed to have measles after being exposed while traveling internationally. It's the “first reported measles case in San Francisco since 2019,” the San Francisco Department of Public Health said. Last year, California saw a total of 25 confirmed measles cases, the CDPH confirmed in an email to the USA TODAY Network. The CDPH did not immediately respond to a question about what factors could be contributing to higher measles cases in the state this year. The virus, which had been declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, surged in cases last year.
