Daiso Can Give U.S. Dollar Stores A Run For Your Money Will Americans look at dollar stores the same way once they’ve been to a Daiso? Probably not. Daiso is the dollar store category translated into Japanese, with different products, and a dramatically different retail culture than its U.S. counterparts. The chain, which already has a strong presence on the West Coast, is making a push into the New York metropolitan area, opening its second store in the region this weekend, in Edgewater, N.J. Daiso, with 78 U.S. stores, is a tiny David to U.S. dollar store Goliaths Dollar General Corporation and Dollar Tree Stores Inc., both of which have in the neighborhood of 15,000 stores. But with two additional stores scheduled to open in New York, and more expected in New Jersey, the chain is poised for rapid growth.
