In a letter to the N.C. Department of Commerce, Family Dollar announced Monday that the facility on Monroe Road is set to permanently close in August. Some of the 373 employees who work there will be laid off on May 18, and the remaining ones by Aug. 18. State fines Charlotte-area stores after register prices don't match shelf tags Family Dollar, founded by the late Charlotte businessman Leon Levine, was acquired by Dollar Tree in 2015 for $8 billion, and then was sold to two private equity firms last March for $1 billion. The company remained headquartered in Chesapeake, Virginia. There are 39 Family Dollar stores in Charlotte alone and more than 300 across North Carolina.
