DTE Energy, one of the state's largest energy providers on Tuesday announced that it will be working with Google to supply power to a 1-gigawatt data center in Van Buren Township. Members of the Van Buren Township Planning Commission voted to give preliminary approval to a site plan for the project in early February, Planet Detroit reported. In addition to the gigawatt of energy needed to power the project, the developer said it would use between 2 million and 3.6 million gallons of water per day, which would be purchased from the township. As part of its agreement with DTE, Google says it will supply 2.7 gigawatts of energy resources to support Michigan's energy grid, including solar energy, energy storage technology and demand flexibility, enabling the data center to shift or reduce its energy use during peak energy demand hours.
