But this isn't the first time our state has tried to hit the brakes on a new industry we don't fully understand. Digging in our heels could end up costing us more than we realize. When auto factories first came to town in the early 1900s, they weren't welcomed with a garland of flowers. Despite the promise of jobs, they brought real concerns: mass production turned skilled workers into cogs on an assembly line, smokestacks belched soot into the sky, cars added danger to the roadways and carriage makers feared for their livelihoods. But the auto industry built the Motor City, turned Flint and Lansing into manufacturing hubs, created the middle class and put Michigan on the world map.
