Millions of Germans are forgoing fibre-optic internet connections even though the technology provides the fastest and most stable service, Deutsche Telekom said on Thursday. The company announced in Bonn that its fibre-optic cables are now available to 11.8 million households, businesses and public authorities - 2.5 million more than a year ago. However only 16.1% are using the service, or 1.5 percentage points higher than in autumn 2024. That is is still far too low, Telekom chief executive Tim Höttges said. The majority of German households will continue to rely on internet via telephone lines (VDSL), which is far slower than fibre, according to the trade asssociation VATM. Cable television networks will also continue to be widely used; their internet is fast but relatively prone to fluctuations.
