It's been nearly a year since the Palisades and Eaton fires in L.A. County, when news reports trickled in of gridlocked traffic for Palisades Fire evacuees to community members desperate to know the status of the homes they abandoned and the pets left behind. The fires burned a combined more than 37,000 acres and left 31 people dead, destroying thousands of buildings and scorching schools, businesses and places of worship. By the end of January 2025, the fires were contained, leaving residents and officials to navigate the aftermath of contaminated soils, rebuilding and analyzing initial response efforts Although the two fires are often discussed for their devastating impact, Southern Californians faced multiple fires that ignited early last January, including the Hughes Fire, the Hurst Fire and the Kenneth Fire.
