On Tuesday, UBS analysts, including Lloyd Walmsley, downgraded the two e-commerce companies to Neutral from Buy after evaluating the impact of two recessionary scenarios, one with a moderate slowdown and second more significant. They believe eBay's shares won't move up in the near term, as most of its gross merchandise volume, or GMV, depends on discretionary spending. Meanwhile, luxury retailer Farfetch 's shares could remain rangebound on concerns that the company could fall short on its full-year financial predictions. EBay stock (ticker: EBAY) fell 3.7% after getting the cut, and Farfetch (FTCH) slid 10.8%. The analysts say eBay's GMV for the full year will decline by approximately 17% year over year, compared with the Street consensus for a 15% drop. This is because the vast majority of its GMV is discretionary spending, and UBS data suggests app downloads and visitors continue to trend lower.
