The Deerfield, Illinois-based retail giant said that its Walgreens Brand Naloxone HCI Nasal Spray will be available online and in stores nationwide for $34.99, a lower price than a comparable national brand product. Its product launch comes weeks after the FDA greenlighted the medicine in April for its use without a prescription to reverse the effects of opioids, including heroin and the synthetic opioid, fentanyl. Opioid overdoses have claimed the lives of more than half a million Americans over more than two decades. However, the number of overdose deaths declined in 2023 for the first time in four years, mainly due to a drop in fatalities linked to fentanyl. Walgreens' ( WBA ) in-store naloxone brand will face competition from the likes of Narcan and Opvee from Emergent BioSolutions ( NYSE: EBS ) and Indivior ( NASDAQ: INDV ), respectively, which won FDA approvals for their OTC products last year.
