CVS, Elevance Health to cover Novo Nordisk's Wegovy: WSJ [Seeking Alpha]

OTCPK:NONOF ) popular weight loss therapy Wegovy for Medicare recipients when used for heart ailments, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. Healthcare plans administered by Medicare were previously allowed to cover weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy and Eli Lilly's ( LLY ) tirzepatide only for diabetes patients. Their decision comes after the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued new guidance last week permitting Medicare Part D drug-benefit plans to cover anti-obesity drugs when used for cardiovascular diseases. The CMS decision reflected the recent FDA approval of Wegovy to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. The approval indicated a label expansion, as the drug, known as semaglutide, was previously approved in the U.S. only for diabetes.
