Perhaps that's not so much of a shock if you've been watching the market shift since the elimination of the $7500 Federal EV incentive this year. The Blue Oval says it's shifting to “higher-return opportunities” that include more trucks and vans, while launching a new battery energy storage business. “Ford no longer plans to produce select larger electric vehicles where the business case has eroded due to lower-than-expected demand, high costs and regulatory changes,” the company said in a release today. As the Lightning fades from the lineup, Ford is swapping in an extended-range EV with 700 miles of estimated range. Doug Field, Ford's chief EV, digital and design officer, says the EREV will still impress with “sub-5-second” acceleration and towing prowess. EREVs are the best of both world for those who want to explore electrification, since they employ a combination of electric motors and a gas-powered generator that extends the range well beyond what an electric-only truck can
