The Canadian prime minister arrived in Beijing on Wednesday night for a three-day visit aimed at rebuilding the two countries' frayed ties, as Canada's economy reels from a year of Mr Trump's tariffs. He is expected to offer Chinese president Xi Jinping a major cut in Canada's 100pc tariff on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), which was set in concert with Washington. In exchange, Beijing would slash its retaliatory levies on Canadian canola, pork and seafood. Mr Carney is hoping a “recalibrated” relationship with China will offset Canada's deteriorating relationship with the US under president Trump. His trip, the first by a Canadian leader in eight years, comes just weeks ahead of Sir Keir Starmer's own mooted visit to China The Prime Minister's foray may be similarly framed as marking a shift in emphasis from security concerns to economic opportunities.
