The Nurburgring is 12.9 miles of twists and elevation changes. Its danger combined with being surrounded by dense forests has earned it the nickname: "The Green Hell." But the team of 16, including Ford Racing factory driver Frédéric Vervischver, faced a huge obstacle: At 46 degrees outside the team could not use "super sticky race" tires for the run because those don't operate well at such cold temperatures, Ford Racing spokesman Jay Ward said. Instead, Ford would have to use regular tires on its Ford GT Mk IV supercar and limit the top speed to 194 miles per hour. Still, in just over six minutes, Ford now can say it has the fastest American car ever to lap the Nurburgring at a time of 6:15.977. Ward said it is difficult to say how much faster the car could have gone in warmer temperatures using the race tires, but "certainly at least another 5 to 7 seconds quicker for sure."
