This plant closure is not permanent and is part of the process that will allow LAP to be at the forefront of Ford's new electric vehicle production strategy. In August, Ford announced it would be investing $2 billion into the smaller of its two Louisville plants and would retool the facility to create a new Universal EV Platform for assembly and bring a new vehicle to market. In order to turn LAP from producing gas powered vehicles into a facility that produces electrified vehicles, Todd Dunn, the president of UAW Local 862, which represents workers at LAP, previously told The Courier Journal workers would undergo a temporary layoff so the plant could transition. In a phone call with The Courier Journal on Dec. 13, Dunn said the last day of work planned at LAP, 2000 Fern Valley Road, is Dec. 17. Dunn noted there are a few variables that could delay the last work date by a day or two but said "as it stands," Dec. 17 is the end of production of the Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair
