Domestic EV sales have increased nearly every year since 2019, with volume topping 1 million units for the first time in 2023 – and again each following year. But early indications suggest that EV sales may fall well short of that threshold in 2026. According to a recent report from Cox Automotive , only 216,399 EVs were sold in the U.S. during the first three months of the year. If nothing changes, annual unit sales will not even clear 870,000, fewer than in any year since 2022. The marked decline in consumer demand is due largely to the Trump administration's repeal of an incentive program that allowed qualified EV buyers to claim a $7,500 federal tax credit. When the program ended in September 2025, quarterly EV sales fell by 46% The latest data shows that any potential recovery for the domestic EV market remains well in the future.
